Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of April 1, 2024 amounted to 1537.9 thousand people, including 248.2 thousand people (16.1%) - urban, 1289.7 thousand people (83.9%) - rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-March 2024 amounted to 5811 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 5637 people). In January-March 2024, newborns were registered by 2.0% more than in January-March 2023, deaths – by 0.5% less.

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 896 people (in January-March 2023 - 942 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of 728 people (719), in internal – positive 168 people and (223).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 34,8 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,6% of the labour force. The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 24331 people or 3,3% of the labour force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the IV quarter of 2023 amounted to 319473 tenge, an increase compared to the IV quarter of 2022 amounted to 17,7%. The real wage index in IV quarter 2023 was 108,4%.

In the IV quarter of 2023 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 136253 tenge, which is 14,4% higher than in IV quarter 2022, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 5,3%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2024 amounted to 573623,6 million tenge in current prices, which is 3,1% more than in January- April 2023.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 42,8%, in manufacturing industry by 1,2%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air there was by increase of 38,4%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 19,4%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2024 amounted to 150412,3 million tenge, or 105,9 % by January-April 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January- April 2024 amounted to 6998.3 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 96.3% compared to January- April 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic – 352,7 million pkm, or 130% by January - April 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 48800,8 million tenge, or 35,0% compared to January- April 2023.

In January-April 2024, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 1,7% and amounted to 321,5 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 16,6% (110,2 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 4,8% (211,1 thousand square meters). 

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January- April 2024 amounted to 160 216,4 million tenge, or 7,8% by January- April 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 20 190 units and increased by 106,1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 19707 units with less than 17 245 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 1 units, including 16763 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 17 080units and increased by 106,8%compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The short-term economic indicator for January-April 2024 compared to January-April 2023 amounted to 107,9%. The calculation of the short-term economic indicator is carried out to ensure efficiency and is based on changes in output indices for basic sectors: agriculture, industry, construction, trade, transport and communications, accounting for over 60% of GDP.

The volume of gross regional product for January-Desember 2023 amounted to 4974850,1 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-Desember 2022, real GRP increased by 2,4%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 42,7%, and services –57,3%.

The consumer price index in January – April 2024 compared to January – April 2023 was 107,1%. Prices for food products increased by 5,8%, non-food products – by 7,3%, paid services for the population – by 9,7%. The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in January – April 2024 compared to January – April 2023 increased by 6%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 180317,7 million, or 100,3% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January- April 2024 amounted to 254488,2 million, or 108,5% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January- March 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 203,4 million dollars decreased by 14,9% compared to January- March 2023, including exports – 72,6 million US dollars (by 0,4% less), imports – 130,8 million US dollars(21,2% less).
