Population size and migration

The population of the city as of April 1, 2024 amounted to 1231.8 thousand people.

The natural increase in the population in January-March 2024 amounted to 6071 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 6009 people).

The number of births in January-March 2024 amounted to 7277 people (0.5% more than in January-March 2023), the number of deaths amounted to 1206 people (2.1% less than in January-March 2023).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to - 3659 people (in January-March 2023 - 362 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of - 123 people (121), in internal - positive - 3536 people (241).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 22.3 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,8% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 12975 people, or 2.9% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2023 amounted to 290848 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2023 amounted to 14.4%. The real wage index in I quarter 2023 was 105%.

In the IV quarter of 2023 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 112248 tenge, which is 15.8% higher than in IV quarter 2022, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 5.8%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2024 amounted to 331067,5 million tenge in current prices, which is 4.3% decreased than in January-April 2023.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 55.3%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air there was by 11.8%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 3.5%.

In the manufacturing industry decreased - by 5.8%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2024 amounted to 13788.3 million tenge, or 101.1% by January-April 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2024 amounted to 3947.8 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 111.1% compared to January-April 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic – 1654.2 million pkm, or 108.4% compared to the level of January-April 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 39783.4 million tenge, or 138.7% compared to January-April 2023.

In January-April 2024, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 17.7% and amounted to 243.8  thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 86.5% times (149.2 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation amounted to 75.3% (94.6 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2024 amounted to 145771.4  million tenge, or 103.5% by January-April 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 28581 units and increased by 3.8% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 28142 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 23124 units, including 22692 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 26261 units and increased by 4.1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The short-term economic indicator for January-April 2024 compared to January-April 2023 amounted to 107%. The calculation of the short-term economic indicator is carried out to ensure efficiency and is based on changes in output indices for basic sectors: agriculture, industry, construction, trade, transport and communications, accounting for over 60% of GDP.

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2023 amounted to 3699654.5 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-December 2022, real GRP increased by 5.6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 27.7%, services – 65.3%.

The consumer price index in April 2024 compared to December 2023 was 103.2%. Prices for food products increased by 3.2%, non-food products – by 3.2%, paid services for the population – by 3.1%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2024 compared to Desember 2023 increased by 0.8%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 255275.3 million tenge, or 6.9% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 350869 million tenge, or 114.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 142.5 million US dollars and decreased by 0.6% compared to January-March 2023, including exports – 24.6 million US dollars (by 13.3% less), imports – 117.9 million US dollars (2.5% more).
